  2. Check the ingredient list for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide

    If either is listed and you’re seeing a cast, that’s the most likely explanation.

  3. Try a chemical-filter SPF alternative in the same shade

    If it's available, testing a chemical-filter version isolates the variable directly.

  4. Look for 'micronized' or 'nano' on the label

    Finer-milled mineral particles scatter less visible light, so a micronized or nano-zinc formula often casts noticeably less than a standard mineral one in the same shade.

SPF isn’t the only culprit. Silica and mica, common in HD and mattifying powders for their blurring effect, can cause a similar reflective flashback with no SPF involved at all. If a cast shows up specifically under flash, check your setting powder’s ingredients too, not just your foundation’s SPF. And if removing both doesn’t fix the ashy look, it’s worth checking the other real causes of greyness.

How do you know it’s the SPF and not the shade?

Do all SPF foundations cause a white cast?
